Vienna, Austria – 22 May 2025 – Two powerful sessions of “Critical Conversations with Ronald Llamas” were held in Vienna on 20 and 21 May 2025, bringing together members of the Filipino community, representing various civic, religious, interest, and regional groups in a timely discussion about the political landscape in the Philippines and the road ahead towards the 2028 presidential elections.
Organised by Tres, Lolit Kaszuba, Ning Lobrigo, and Marizel Rojas —a civic-minded trio of Filipino women leaders in Austria known for promoting dialogue, solidarity, and empowerment—the back-to-back conversations took place at Stephansplatz on 20 May and at the United Nations in Vienna on 21 May. The guest speaker, Ronald Llamas, former presidential adviser on political affairs of the Philippines and a respected democracy advocate, delivered candid insights that both challenged and inspired the audience.
At the outset, Llamas painted a sobering picture of the current political climate in the Philippines, marked by democratic backsliding, disinformation, and entrenched political dynasties. However, he swiftly balanced this with stories of resistance, resilience, and a growing wave of political engagement among Filipino youth.

“Don’t give up,” he urged. “The hope for a better Philippines lies in the hands of the Millennials and Gen Zs, who are already showing remarkable political awareness and activism. The challenge now is to harness this energy and translate it into concrete change.”
The conversations called on Filipinos at home and abroad to amplify democratic values, demand ethical leadership, and choose candidates with integrity for the 2028 elections. Llamas emphasized that while the 2022 elections had their setbacks, they also saw unprecedented youth participation—proof that a cultural shift is already underway.
Beyond the formal discussions, Llamas also had the chance to experience Vienna’s cultural charm. Guided by Lolit Kaszuba, he enjoyed sightseeing across the city, including a hearty Filipino lunch at Halamanan sa Barangay, a beloved community hub led by Cristy and Felipe Unlayao. He also experienced a traditional Austrian evening at a Heurigen in Am Hof, where he interacted with Austrians and soaked in the unique blend of cultures that Vienna offers.
Attendees described the events as “eye-opening,” “courageous,” and “deeply motivational,” emphasizing the importance of honest and critical conversations in shaping an informed electorate.
These events form part of Tres’ continuing commitment to fostering civic engagement and political education among overseas Filipinos, who remain vital stakeholders in the nation’s future.
